Abstract Body : Ectopic varices are considered to be a rare finding associated with portal hypertension. As a rule, these varices do not involve the gastric or esophageal veins. They do not commonly rupture or hemorrhage, but In cases where they do, they can be catastrophic.
Here we report a case of ectopic sigmoid varices affecting the sigmoidal veins within the sigmoid mesocolon of a human anatomical donor with a history of GI and Liver pathology.
The varices in the present report were discovered during routine anatomical dissection, and consisted of several interconnected roughly spherical enlargements of the sigmoidal veins. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first characterization of this particular pathological finding in a cadaver. Anatomical and clinical considerations will be discussed further.
