Abstract Body : While there has always been great interest in camel physiology and its myriad adaptations to arid ecosystems, little attention was being paid to the gross anatomy of the dromedary (Camelus dromedarius). In 1982, an international team was assembled in Beer Sheva, Israel, and provided with resources and funding to produce the world’s first complete atlas of camel anatomy.
This presentation will offer a pictorial narrative and perspective on the production of a veterinary atlas based on dissection and traditional illustration techniques. Topics to be covered will include historical precedents, context for the creation of the atlas, procurement, preparation, and preservation of specimens, illustrative process and techniques, and legacy.
