Abstract Body : Introduction: This study assesses the efficacy of printed three-dimensional (3D) models of the paranasal sinuses for educational purposes and their applicability in personalized surgical interventions. Nineteen participants, comprising residents and senior otorhinolaryngologists at St. Pölten University Hospital, were included in this study.









Material and Methods: This proof-of-concept investigation involved developing and printing a 3D model visualizing the paranasal sinuses together with adjacent vulnerable structures. The 3D Slicer^© software combined with manual segmentation was utilized to segment CT and MRI scans from a healthy individual to generate a 3D printable dataset: sinus maxillaris, sinus sphenoidalis, sinus frontalis, cellulae ethmoidales, arteria carotis interna, nervus opticus, nervus olfactorius and the nasal septum including the conchae. Each structure was printed in a distinct color to highlight specific anatomical features and then precisely assembled. Additionally, objective measurements were conducted to assess accuracy of crucial structures within the 3D model. The participants completed a two-part questionnaire, evaluating the comprehensibility of the 3D model in comparison to a CT scan.









Results: The statistical evaluation confirmed that the 3D model offered a valuable visual representation, enhancing comprehension of the individual morphology of anatomical structures. It significantly outperformed CT scans in assessing the topology of soft tissue structures (such as the internal carotid artery, optic nerve, and olfactory nerve). However, CT scans were more effective for evaluating bony structures.









Conclusion: 3D models of paranasal sinuses have the potential to improve training for future doctors and young otorhinolaryngology residents. They provide enhanced visualization and understanding of individual complex anatomical relationships.









Significance: The study confirms the potential of 3D printed models to advance medical education, especially for young doctors and otorhinolaryngology trainees. Enhanced visualization of intricate anatomical structures suggests opportunities for better teaching methods and surgical planning. Yet, overcoming technical hurdles such as long printing times and improved segmentation processes are critical for point of care use in clinical settings.
