Bonnie Wang, Kirsten Langereis, Robyn Cunningham-Dunlop, and Zhaojing Chen are students of the Biomedical Communications Certificate program at the University of British Columbia. Under the supervision and support of Bailey Lo, Monika Fejtek, and Claudia Krebs from UBC, and Valerie D. O’Loughlin from Indiana University, this diverse team embarked on a collaborative journey fueled by a passion for inclusive education and a dedication to combating misinformation.
Their collective efforts culminated in the creation of an innovative online learning module on genital development. Rooted in principles of inclusive design, learner-centered design, and user experience research, the team sought to challenge binary frameworks and promote a nuanced understanding of genital development, sex, and gender.
Through their comprehensive module, they tackled prevalent misconceptions surrounding genital development, offering learners a platform to explore variations in genotypic and phenotypic sex. Features such as quizzes, voice narration, animations, and non-gendered language and design were incorporated to ensure accessibility and inclusivity for all learners.
Looking ahead, the team plans to expand its impact by developing accompanying modules to delve deeper into variations in typical genital development. By dismantling misconceptions and embracing inclusive design principles, they aspire to revolutionize embryology education, prioritizing the needs of individuals with non-gender conforming, non-binary identities, and differences in development.
