Instructional Assistant
McMaster University, Canada
My name is Dr. Stephen Russell, and I work in the Department of Greek and Roman Studies at McMaster University. I received my PhD in 2011 (in Classics, with a focus on Latin literature) and have been leading our medical language programme since 2013.
Our medical terminology programme, with our textbooks and website resources, provides the basis for eight other similar programmes/courses at major universities across Canada. Moreover, since 2013 we have seen our programme expand into an advanced course, in which we deal with problems of complex anatomical Latin terms.
Our poster project at the AAA conference focusses on providing literal English phrases for the 7,113 Latin terms of the TA2.
I am currently interested in doing research on establishing a framework for creating a Latin nomenclature for variant anatomy, since the current lack of a framework is the main stumbling block for creating such a nomenclature. And, naturally, I am interested in talking to anatomists who are equally interested in discussing (and collaborating) on this.
My email address is russelsc@mcmaster.ca. Please reach out to me if you have anything you would like to discuss. It strikes me that the Latinists who teach the language of anatomy do not work with the anatomists who use it, and I am to change that, with your help.
