Dr. Smith earned their Ph.D. in Anatomy and Cell Biology from Indiana University-Bloomington and then joined the TUC faculty as an assistant professor of anatomy in the TUCOM Foundational Biomedical Sciences Department. As an educational researcher, Dr. Smith has focused on the neuroscience of learning and how educational design and pedagogy can be leveraged to make the classroom more accessible, inclusive, and equitable. They are also a co-PI of the Portfolios of People: Advancing Anatomical Representation Together (POP-AART) project, a national effort to create a depository of diverse and inclusive images for anatomical teaching. At TUC, when not in the gross anatomy lab, Dr. Smith serves as faculty advisor for the Rainbow Health Coalition and as course coordinator for the LGBTQIA+ Considerations in Healthcare elective. They also serve as the TUCOM Director of DEI and as the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Anti-Racism (IDEA) Committee chair — working with an incredible group of students, faculty, and staff to promote IDEA principles on campus and designing effective curriculum to address health inequities.
